The India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI): Developing a high-impact, low-cost solution

WHO

Aimed at reducing death and disability due to CVDs, the India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) sought to improve the control of hypertension, reduce salt consumption, and eliminate artificial trans-fats — the leading risk factors for CVDs.

The Government of India (GOI) initiated the India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) and adopted a national action plan to prevent and control non-communicable diseases (NCDs) aligned with the WHO’s global targets to be achieved by 2025. It includes a 25% relative reduction in overall mortality from cardiovascular diseases and a 25% relative reduction in raised blood pressure prevalence.

IPE is responsible for managing 138 consultants – cardiovascular Health Officers (CVHOs) and Senior Treatment Supervisors (STS) and oversee the day-to-day administration and pay-rolling including recruitment and onboarding of suitable candidates, HR and administrative management, logistics and event support for training and meetings, maintain database for monitoring and reporting, operational oversight through development of SOPs and systems for HR, and transition and compliance.
